On typical autumn days like these, one can witness a picturesque scene at Gwanggyo Lake Park, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. As if to prove how much people have endured and held back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, families gather leisurely in the shade of trees on the lawn, enjoying a peaceful day together.
Under the well-trimmed green grass and shady trees, people spread out mats, set up folding chairs or tables, and enjoy the food and drinks they’ve brought with them. A young couple lies stretched out, listening to music or reading a book, while multigenerational families share food with their grandchildren in a harmonious atmosphere. Children ride unicycles around the park, some families cycle around the lake, while others play badminton, fly kites, or catch dragonflies with their fathers—all engaged in relaxed yet lively activities.
Even the little ones are busy marveling at the artificial rock climbing area. Sitting on a bench, I look up at the high sky and savor the scene, reminiscent of the Montsouris Park near the international dormitory village in southwest Paris, which I admired so much in the 70s. The atmosphere here is so European that I almost feel as if I am in Paris's Montsouris Park again. The same picturesque scenery continues as I stroll towards the central plateau of Gwanggyo.
Leisure, after all, is an activity pursued in one's free time, and it's only natural to see young couples playing with their children, enjoying family time together—a scene straight out of an Impressionist painting. Now, we too have found not only material comfort but also the cultural and mental space to appreciate and enjoy such moments, despite the rampant spread of COVID-19.

임교수의 문학산책: 에피소드 7
# 인상파 그림 같은 풍경
요즘처럼 전형적인 가을 날씨, 토/일요일이면 광교호수공원에는 한 폭의 그림 같은 광경을 볼 수 있다. 코로나 감염사태로 인해 얼마나 참고 견디며 눌려 있는지를 증명이라도 하듯이 모두 잔디밭 나무 그늘에 가족 단위로 모여 한가로이 여유를 누리고 있다.
잘 깎여진 푸른 잔디밭 나무 그늘아래 돗자리를 깔고 접이식 의자나 탁자를 설치해 놓고 준비해온 음식이나 음료수를 즐기는 여유 있는 모습, 젊은 한 쌍은 길게 누워 음악을 듣거나 책을 읽고 있고, 할아버지나 할머니가 있는 효도 가족은 챙겨온 음식을 손주들이랑 함께 나눠 먹는 행복한 분위기 속에 나들이 분위기이고 손자 손녀들은 외발 놀이기구를 타고 혼자 공원을 한 바퀴 돌기도 하고 어느 가족은 자전거 가족으로 몽탕 자전거를 타고 호수를 돌며 즐기고 또는 아빠랑 배드민턴을 하거나 연을 날리거나 잠자리를 잡거나 모두 여유롭게 분주하다.
재미난 밭 인공바위 오르기에는 꼬마들까지 구경하느라 바쁘다. 벤치에 자리 잡고 앉아 난 잠시 높은 하늘을 바라보며 70년대 파리에 있을 때 파리 서남쪽 국제기숙사촌 가까이에 있는 몽수리공원에서 무척이나 부러워했던 그 광경이 오늘 호수공원 잔디밭 어디든지 펼쳐져 있는 것을 음미한다. 잠시 내가 파리 몽수리공원에 와 있는 것은 아닌가 하는 착각이 들 정도로 분위기가 너무도 유럽답다. 광교 중앙고원 쪽으로 산책을 이어가지만, 그곳에서도 마찬가지의 풍경이다.
여가란 무릇 여가시간에 이뤄지는 활동이듯이 젊은 부부는 아이들이랑 함께 놀아주며 가족 단위로 여가를 즐기는 모습이 자연스럽기까지 하고 한 폭의 인상파 그림이다. 이제 우리에게도 물질적 여유에다가 나름 문화적 욕구를 누리고 즐길 줄 아는 마음의 여유가 생겼다. 비록 코로나바이러스감염사태가 극성을 부리더라도….
