In her senior year of college, Hwang Inheh learned the art of making knot buttons from her mother. The youngest of one son and five daughters, she was deeply loved and nurtured by her mother. Her mother advised, “Although it's not commonly used anymore, you should learn it just in case you ever need it.” These knot buttons became more than just a technique; they symbolized the invisible thread of love binding the artist to her mother.

Hwang carefully dyes traditional Korean paper, cuts it into fine strips, twists them into cords, and continuously fashions buttons from these cords. The act of tying and binding with these cords represents an unbreakable bond of love. It is not merely a physical knot but a symbol of love that stretches infinitely, binding two souls across time.
The charcoal lines she draws resemble the horizontal and vertical strokes of Hangul, Korea’s written language. The buttons placed within these lines are like the dots (ᆞ) in Hangul. Together, these strokes and dots weave a vision of a world intertwined with truth and love, a world that knows no end. The charcoal lines represent the paths of the past and the journeys yet to come. Each button on those paths symbolizes joy, sorrow, or pain, but through it all, there is only gratitude.

These paper knot buttons transcend their role as simple objects on a flat surface. They evoke the warmth and love of a mother, drawing viewers into an intimate, personal reflection. The artist herself returns to her childhood when she closes her studio door. Memories of her large house with a well-tended garden, her orchard house shaded by tall pine trees, and her days chasing butterflies and dragonflies come flooding back. These memories aren’t mere remnants of the past; they live and breathe through the knot buttons crafted by her hands.
Though human love eventually fades, divine love is eternal and boundless. Through these knot buttons, the artist seeks to express that endless love. This is why it is called "endless Love."

# 「그지없는 사랑」 매듭단추

황인혜 작가는 대학교 4학년 때 어머니로부터 특별한 기술을 전수받았다. 그것은 바로 매듭단추를 만드는 법이었다. 1남 5녀 중 막내로 태어난 그는 어머니의 사랑을 한없이 받으며 자라왔다. 어머니는 "지금은 잘 쓰이지 않지만, 네가 언젠가 필요할지 모르니 배워두라"며 끈을 엮어 매듭단추를 만드는 법을 알려주셨다. 이 단추들은 단순한 도구 이상의 의미를 지니고 있었다. 그것은 작가와 어머니를 이어주는 눈에 보이지 않는 끈, 즉 사랑의 상징이 되었다.

황 작가는 한지를 물감으로 물들인 후 가늘게 자르고, 이를 꼬아 끈을 만든다. 그 끈으로 단추를 쉼 없이 엮어낸다. 이 과정을 통해 끈으로 이어주고 맺어줌으로써 사랑의 끈이 더욱 견고해진다. 그저 물리적인 매듭이 아니라, 영원히 이어지는 사랑의 상징인 것이다.
목탄으로 그려낸 가로세로의 선들은 마치 한글의 'ㅡ', 'ㅣ'처럼 보인다. 그 사이에 놓인 단추는 한글의 '점(ᆞ)'을 닮았다. 이 선과 점이 모여 만들어내는 그림은 진리와 사랑이 얽히고설킨 끝없는 세상을 꿈꾼다. 목탄선들은 지나온 과거의 길이자, 앞으로 나아갈 미래의 길을 나타낸다. 그 길 위에 얹혀 있는 단추들은 삶 속의 기쁨, 슬픔, 고통을 상징하며, 그 모든 것에 감사하는 마음을 품게 한다.

매듭단추는 평면적인 오브제로서의 역할을 넘어선다. 그것은 어머니의 사랑과 그 따뜻함을 떠올리게 하며, 작가는 이 작업을 통해 다시금 어린 시절로 돌아가곤 한다. 정원이 잘 가꾸어진 읍내의 집과 노송이 우거진 숲을 거느린 과수원집에서 나비와 잠자리를 쫓아다니던 그 시간들. 그 시간은 단지 추억 속에만 있는 것이 아니라, 매듭단추를 통해 지금도 그의 손끝에서 살아 숨 쉰다.
인간의 사랑은 결국 끝나지만, 신과의 사랑은 끝이 없고 무한하다. 작가는 그 무한한 사랑을 매듭단추로 표현하고자 한다. 그래서 이 작품은 ‘그지없는 사랑’인 것이다.
