Cho Jung Woo, a sculptor who has quietly devoted his life to the field of stone sculpture, will hold an exhibition. The exhibition will showcase his main series, "Stone Da Wan," carved from rocks, and flat works, at Yoon Seul Art Museum in Kimhae Cultural Center, South Korea from May 21st to 26th, 2024.

Cho Jung Woo, in his invitation message for the exhibition, articulated the significance of this event: 'I have opened this exhibition with the intention of embodying the desire for freedom from reality and ideals in my artworks, hoping that it will serve as a space for sharing a world of art, akin to a form of smoke passing through the walls of empty space through artistic expressions.

‘In the process of emptying, I too keep discarding. Whether I excel or falter,

Whether it's right or wrong, I discard it all. Continuously...

I don't know how much lighter it will become as I keep discarding.

But that's my work.

Sometimes hammering, sometimes refining, and at times, cutting through with a saw.

It's so hard. I think it's better because the process is difficult.’

- 5월21일~26일, 김해문화의 전당 윤슬미술관에서 열려

일생동안 묵묵히 석조각 분야에 종사해 온 우리시대의 돌쟁이 조정우 작가의 작품전이 열린다.

조정우 작가의 메인 시리즈인 돌을 깍아내어 제작한 돌다완와 평면작품을 2024년 5월 21일부터 26일까지 김해문화의 전당, 윤슬미술관 내 제 3전시실에서 공개한다.

조정우 작가는 초청 인사말에서, ‘현실과 이상으로부터 자유로움을 얻고자 하는 마음을 작품에 담아 전시회를 열게 되었으며, 이를 통해 허공의 벽을 통과하는 연기처럼 자유로움을 표현한 작품세계를 나누는 공간이 되기를 희망한다’고 이번 작품전의 의미를 밝혔다.

그가 늘 대면하는 강직한 돌을 닮아서인지, 그의 예술세계관에 관한 이야기도 미사여구를 떼어낸 소박하고 직설적이다. 그리 풀어 놓은 이야기는 시적(詩的)이고 역설적이다. 그의 이야기에서 숱한 역경을 이겨내 온 힘이 느껴진다.

2023년도에 개최된 컬처 마스터즈 창립행사에서 소개된 조정우 작가 영상에서 요약 발췌한 그의 작품 세계는 아래와 같다.

나는 이 우주의 모든 돌들에게 경애를 표한다.

‘비우는 과정에 나도 계속 버리는거죠.

내가 잘하는 것이든 못하는 것이든

옳은 것이든 그른 것이든

다 버리는 것이죠. 계속…

버리고 버리다 보면 얼마나 가벼워질지는 모르지만

그게 내 작업이죠.

때로는 망치질도 하고 때로는 정질도 하고

또 때로는 톱으로 잘라내기도 하는 과정이

너무 힘들어요.

과정이 어렵기 때문에 더 좋은 것 같아요.’
