아리랑 마스터즈(Arirang Master)로 선정된 임웅수 명인

(주)컬처마스터즈(Culture Masters)와 전통문화예술인협회(AACM)가 공동 주최한
제6차 국제자문이사회(IAB)가 2025년 11월 7일, 16개국의 무형유산 및 문화정책 분야 최고 전문가들이 참여한 가운데 개최되었다.

이 자리에서 경기도 무형문화재 제20호 광명농악 보유자이자, 사단법인 대한민국농악연합회 이사장이며 사단법인 국악진흥회 부이사장인 임웅수 명인이
‘2025년도 하반기 아리랑 마스터즈(Arirang Master No. 25001104)’로 공식 선정되었다.

이번 지정은 임 명인이 반세기 이상 한국 농악의 전통을 지켜오며,
예술적 완성도, 창의적 재해석, 그리고 공동체 기반의 문화 확산에 헌신한 공로를 높이 인정한 결과이다.

아리랑 마스터즈 프로그램: 무형유산과 국제문화연대의 플랫폼

아리랑 마스터즈(Arirang Masters)는 (주)컬처마스터즈가 2023년에 출범시킨
국제 무형문화유산 실연자 인증 프로그램으로,
무형문화유산 분야에서 탁월한 기량과 전승 활동을 펼쳐온 예술인을 공식적으로 지정한다.

이 프로그램은 1980년 유네스코 「예술가의 지위에 관한 권고」와
2003년 「무형문화유산 보호협약」의 원칙을 반영해 설계되었으며,
예술가의 사회적 지위 향상과 함께 국제 문화외교 및 지속가능한 문화연대의 구축을 목표로 하고 있다.

현재까지 21개국 이상에서 38명의 마스터가 지정되었으며,
각국의 실연자들은 교육, 디지털 전승, 국제 공연, 공동체 중심의 문화 교류를 통해
지속가능한 글로벌 문화 네트워크를 형성하고 있다.
이번 임웅수 명인의 선정은 한국 전통 연희예술이 세계무형유산 담론 속에서
새로운 문화리더십 모델로 자리 잡고 있음을 보여주는 상징적인 사건이다.

공동체의 북소리로 세상을 울리다

임웅수 명인은 광명농악보존회 예술감독으로서 450년 전통의 상공춤(上公춤)을 복원하고, 구름산 도당굿의 원형을 되살리며 농악을 공동체의 예술로 재창조하였다.
그의 북소리는 단순한 연주가 아니라, 세대와 계층을 아우르는 문화적 연대의 언어로 기능해왔다.

그는 ‘밥심축제(Bapsim Festival)’를 창안하여
대동사상(大同思想)을 예술로 풀어냈으며,
사단법인 대한민국농악연합회 이사장으로서 전국 농악 공동체의 협력 기반을 강화하고, 사단법인 국악진흥회 부이사장으로서 국악진흥법 제정 운동을 주도하며
예술과 정책의 접점을 넓혔다.

2026년에는 ‘K-Peace 문화외교 프로젝트’를 이끌며,
16개국 순회공연을 통해 한국의 북소리로 평화와 연대의 메시지를 전할 예정이다.

아리랑 마스터즈의 철학을 구현하는 여정이 될 것이다.

Lim Woong-soo, Chairman of the Korean Nongak Federation, officially designated as Arirang Master

The 6th Session of the International Advisory Board (IAB), jointly organized by Culture Masters (CM) and the Advocacy Alliance for Culture Masters (AACM), was held on November 7, 2025, with participation from foremost experts in intangible cultural heritage and cultural policy representing 16 countries.

During the meeting, Mr. Lim Woong-soo, holder of Gyeonggi-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 20 (Gwangmyeong Nongak), Chairman of the Korean Nongak Federation (Republic of Korea), and Vice Chairman of the Korean Traditional Music Promotion Association, was officially designated as Arirang Master No. 25001104 for the second half of 2025.

This appointment honors his more than five decades of dedication to preserving, revitalizing, and transmitting the living rhythm of Korean farmers’ band music (Nongak) through artistic excellence, creative reinterpretation, and community-based leadership.

The Arirang Masters Program – A Platform for Intangible Heritage and Global Solidarity

Launched in 2023 by Culture Masters, the Arirang Masters Program is an international certification and recognition initiative that honors practitioners of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) who demonstrate outstanding artistic mastery and cultural impact.

The program was designed in alignment with the 1980 UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Artists and the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, aiming to enhance the social status of artists and foster international cultural diplomacy and sustainable networks of solidarity.

To date, 38 masters from over 21 countries have been designated.
Together they are building a sustainable global network for heritage education, digital transmission, international performance, and community-based collaboration.
Mr. Lim’s appointment symbolizes how Korean traditional performing arts are emerging as a new model of cultural leadership within the global heritage discourse.

Resonating with the Drumbeat of Community

As Artistic Director of the Gwangmyeong Nongak Preservation Society,
Chairman of the Korean Nongak Federation, and Vice Chairman of the Korean Traditional Music Promotion Association,
Mr. Lim has restored the 450-year-old Sanggongchum (Chief Drummer’s Dance) and revived the original form of Gureumsan Dodanggut, transforming Nongak into an art of collective participation.
His drumbeat transcends performance itself — it serves as a cultural language of solidarity that bridges generations and communities.

He also founded the Bapsim Festival, an innovative celebration that translates the traditional philosophy of Daedong-sasang (communal unity) into contemporary artistic expression.
In his policy leadership roles, he has championed the legislative movement for the Korean Traditional Music Promotion Act, bridging the fields of policy and practice to strengthen the future of Korean music heritage.

From Art to Peace – A Stage for Cultural Diplomacy

In 2026, Mr. Lim will lead the K-Peace Cultural Diplomacy Project, a performance tour across 16 countries that will share Korea’s spirit of peace and solidarity through the sound of the drum.

He is widely regarded as a cultural leader who embodies both artistic excellence and communal spirit, ensuring that the heartbeat of Korean Nongak resonates beyond generations and across borders — a living rhythm that shapes the future of Korea’s intangible heritage on the world stage.
