This work, titled 「In the Grace – Old Time」, is a painting work by Inheh Hwang in 1993. It is a single artwork composed of four individual segments brought together as one.

It is impossible to deny the sense of gratitude for the natural world created by the Creator and the benefits of civilization—enabled by the invention of written language—that allow us to enjoy a life of abundance. This idea led to the creation of the 「In the Grace」 series, which unites nature, humanity, and script as one.

Among ancient Chinese scripts such as Jinwen (bronze inscriptions), like the oracle bone script, there are characters shaped after the human body. These seem to depict human actions and may have been used for communication.

Characters resembling the actions of tree planting, alongside symbolic leaves representing nature, suggest more than just simple actions—they appear to hold deeper meaning. They evoke thoughts about ancient people who lived with love for nature and reverence for the Creator.

The deep green leaves convey a sense of rich foliage, and the sunlight filtering through them brings a feeling of peace.

Saving the Earth is ultimately saving humanity. At a time when we must pay close attention to protecting and cherishing nature in order to combat the severe effects of global warming, this piece is a fitting contribution to the "Forest Cultivation Campaign."

# 은혜안에서 시리즈 – 자연, 인간, 문자

은혜안에서 – Old time 순지, 먹, 채색 69 x 62 cm 1993

이 작품은 황인혜의 1993년작으로 「은혜안에서 – Old time」 이다. 넷으로 나누어진 조각이 합해져 하나의 작품이 된 것이다.

조물주께서 만들어 주신 자연, 이 모든 것에 대한 감사한 마음과 인간이 만들어 낸 문자 없이는 불가능했을 문명의 혜택으로 풍요한 삶을 누리고 있다는 생각을 부인할 수 없다. 그래서 자연, 인간, 문자의 셋이 하나로 이루어진 「은혜안에서」 라는 시리즈가 나오게 되었다고 한다.

갑골문자처럼 중국의 고대문자의 하나인 금문(金文)에는 인체를 나타낸 글꼴들이 있는데, 인간의 행위를 묘사하여 의사소통을 한 듯 하다.

자연을 상징하는 나뭇잎들과 함께 나무를 심는 모양의 글자가 단순한 행위에 그치는게 아닌 깊은 뜻을 내포한 듯 하다.

아득한 옛날 자연을 사랑하고 조물주에 대한 경외심으로 살았던 사람들을 생각나게 한다.

짙푸른 잎새들은 풍요로운 녹음을 느끼게 하고 그 사이로 스며드는 햇살은 평온을 가져 오는 듯 하다.

지구살리기는 곧 사람살리기다. 심각한 온난화 현상을 극복하기 위해 자연을 보호하고 사랑하며, 세심한 주의를 기울여야 하는 때에 「숲가꾸기 캠페인」을 위한 적절한 작품이 될 것이다.
