The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), led by Administrator Jang Dong-eon, announced that "Winter in Danyang Bobaljae Pass", a photograph by Korean artist Lee Sang-woon, has been selected as the December image for the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) 2025 calendar.
Alongside this, a total of 14 works have been chosen to represent each month, delivering a global message on climate change and the importance of early warning systems.
"Closing the Early Warning Gap Together" – A Theme of Global Significance
The WMO hosts an annual calendar photo contest for its 193 member countries to showcase the power of nature and emphasize critical climate messages. This year’s theme, "Closing the Early Warning Gap Together," led to the selection of 14 captivating images, including two for the cover and one for each month.
In addition to Korea’s "Winter in Danyang Bobaljae Pass," the calendar features Nepal’s majestic Himalayan landscapes, Kenya’s sunset-lit savannahs, Canada’s awe-inspiring auroras, and New Zealand’s pristine glaciers, among others. These works not only highlight the diverse beauty of nature but also underscore the urgency of addressing climate change and enhancing early warning systems for disaster preparedness.
Korea’s Consistent Contributions and Global Impact
Korea has achieved the remarkable feat of having its photographs selected for the WMO calendar for six consecutive years since 2020. This year’s selection, "Winter in Danyang Bobaljae Pass," captures the grandeur of a snow-covered mountain pass, effectively conveying the critical need for robust early warning systems in an era of escalating climate challenges.
Jang Dong-eon, Administrator of the KMA, commented, “The WMO calendar is more than just a collection of beautiful images; it symbolizes the global effort to address climate change and the importance of early warning systems in protecting lives and communities. I hope this calendar, featuring works from Korea and around the world, inspires international cooperation and action.”
Raising Awareness of the Beauty and Power of Nature Globally
The WMO calendar is not only a visual celebration of nature but also a vital tool for raising awareness about climate change and the necessity of early warning systems. The selected photographs, representing diverse natural landscapes and climates, serve as a powerful reminder of the need for global solidarity in the face of environmental challenges.
The KMA plans to continue supporting outstanding domestic works through its photo contests, encouraging creative contributions that resonate on an international stage and promote Korea’s commitment to addressing climate change.
