Around last autumn, a pair of white ducks appeared at the southwestern corner of Lake Shindae. I, who had long dreamed of a lake graced by swans, was elated. I believed that anyone who regularly walked or exercised by the lake would share my sentiment. However, a severe monsoon caused the female duck to disappear, an incident that left the male duck alone and sparked widespread concern for his well-being. People wondered how he would survive the approaching winter, but no one had a clear solution. They could only offer him food out of pity. Despite his sorrow, the lone white male duck managed to blend in with the wild ducks.
As winter set in, the lake froze over. The male duck found refuge in a small, unfrozen corner of the lake, sharing the cramped space with coots. Among fifty black coots, the single white duck stood out, yet he adapted well to his circumstances. Children and adults alike visited this spot specifically to see the white duck, throwing food they had hidden in their pockets. In the midst of staying home, the desire to see the white duck during a stroll was universal.
Isn't it time for us to enjoy the sight of white ducks or swans gracing our everyday walks by the lake? The presence of these graceful birds has countless positive effects on our hearts. Watching children interact with a lake inhabited by swans or white ducks is far more educational than a hundred admonishments to be kind. Applauding the efforts of those who manage the lake, I eagerly anticipate the day when we can see swans or white ducks swimming gracefully in the lake.

임교수의 문학산책: 에피소드 6
# 호수에 흰 오리를!
집오리는 청둥오리가 가축화된 것으로 잡초나 해충을 먹는 동물이다. 배설물도 좋은 비료로 쓰는 이로운 동물로 환경에 적응력도 강하고 주인도 알아보고 잘 따르는 머리가 좋은 녀석이다. 특히 어린아이들에게는 디즈니의 도널드 덕으로 친근감이 많은 애완동물이기도 하다.
작년 가을쯤 신대호수 서남쪽 모퉁이에 흰 오리 한 쌍이 등장했다. 평소에 백조가 노니는 호수를 꿈꾸어왔던 난 무척 반겼다. 대부분 호수를 산책하거나 운동하는 사람이라면 모두 한 마음이리라 생각한다. 하지만 큰 장마로 암컷이 사라지는 사고가 나고 말았다. 예기치 못한 이 일로 홀로된 수컷의 삶을 걱정하는 소리가 뜨거웠다. 특히 다가오는 겨울을 어떻게 견딜 수 있을지 모두 한마디씩 했지만 뾰족한 해결책은 없었다. 다만 불쌍하다며 먹이를 갖다 줄 뿐이었다. 시름에 빠졌던 흰 오리 수컷도 나름으로 야생오리와 잘 어울려 지내고 있다.
겨울이 오니 호수가 얼어버렸다. 얼지 않은 호수 한 모퉁이에서 물닭들과 함께 좁은 곳에서 겨우살이를 하고 있다. 쉰 마리 정도 되는 까만 물닭 속, 흰 오리 한 마리, 그는 나름의 환경 속에서 잘 적응하며 살고 있다. 아이들이나 어른들이나 흰 오리 한 마리를 보려고 일부러 이곳에 찾아와 주머니 속에 숨겨온 먹이를 던져준다. 집콕 속에서나마 산책하는 동안 흰 오리를 보고 싶은 마음은 누구나 다 똑같은 마음이리라.
이제, 우리 일상 속에 흰 오리/백조가 노니는 호수를 보며 산책할 수 있는 여유를 누릴 때가 되지 않았나 싶다. 흰 오리/백조가 노니는 호수의 이점은 우리 마음을 순화시키는 순기능적인 것들이 얼마나 많은가? 아이들보고 착해지라는 백 마디 말보다 백조가 노니는 호수에서 산책하는 모습을 한번 보는 것이 훨씬 더 큰 교육이 되지 않을까? 호수를 관리하는 분들의 노고에 박수를 보내면서 호수에 백조나 흰 오리들이 노니는 것을 보는 그날을 기대해 본다.
