Prof. (Dr.) Deepti Omchery Bhalla, officially appointed as Arirang Master
At the 6th Session of the International Advisory Board (IAB) jointly organized by Culture Masters (CM) and the Advocacy Alliance for Culture Masters (AACM),
Prof. (Dr.) Deepti Omchery Bhalla, a renowned exponent of Mohiniyattam and eminent scholar of Indian classical music, was officially appointed as Arirang Master No. 25001102 for the second half of 2025.
This designation recognizes her distinguished artistic mastery, innovative choreography, and lifelong commitment to preserving and transmitting India’s intangible cultural heritage through education, performance, and research.
Arirang Masters Program: A Global Recognition for Living Heritage
Launched in 2023 by Culture Masters, the Arirang Masters Program honors exemplary practitioners of intangible cultural heritage from around the world.
Designed in alignment with the 1980 UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Artists and the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the program provides official certification and a global platform for artists who embody the values of cultural continuity and innovation.
To date, 38 masters from 21 countries have been designated, fostering a sustainable global network for education, digital transmission, and intercultural collaboration.
Prof. Bhalla’s appointment highlights the universal value of India’s performing arts as a living heritage that bridges tradition and modern creativity.
A Distinguished Scholar and Performer
A top-graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and a senior professor at the University of Delhi, Prof. Bhalla has dedicated more than 38 years to advancing the field of Indian classical dance and music.
She is celebrated for her mastery of lasya — the graceful expressiveness central to Mohiniyattam — and her integration of Carnatic vocal traditions into dance.
Her acclaimed works, including “AMSHI – The Unsung Hero of India” and Mohiniyattam–Kathak Jugalbandi, have expanded the interpretative range of Indian classical dance, blending rigorous traditional aesthetics with contemporary narrative depth.
Through lectures and workshops at institutions such as UCLA, SOKA University (Japan), and Hope University (Liverpool), she has inspired global audiences and mentored new generations of artists.
Recognition and Legacy
Prof. Bhalla has received over 30 national and international awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (conferred by the President of India), Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi Award, and SPIC MACAY Samman.
Her research and performances are archived by the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Invis Multimedia, ensuring her legacy as one of the foremost guardians of India’s living performing arts.

인도 전통무용 모히니야탐(Mohiniyattam)의 세계적 대가이자 인도 고전음악학자 딥티 옴체리 발라(Prof. Deepti Omchery Bhalla) 교수가
2025년도 하반기 아리랑 마스터(Arirang Master No. 25001102)로 공식 선정되었다.
이번 지정은 그녀가 40여 년간 예술가, 연구자, 교육자로서 인도의 무형유산을 전승하고 창의적으로 발전시켜 온 공로를 기리는 것이다.
아리랑 마스터즈 프로그램: 세계가 인정한 무형유산 인증 제도
아리랑 마스터즈(Arirang Masters)는 2023년 컬처마스터즈(Culture Masters)가 창설한 세계 무형유산 실연자 인증 프로그램으로, 전 세계 예술인들의 문화적 연속성과 혁신을 인정하는 국제 플랫폼이다.
이 제도는 1980년 유네스코 ‘예술가의 지위에 관한 권고’와
'2003년 ‘무형문화유산 보호협약’의 정신에 따라 설계되었다.
현재까지 21개국 38명의 마스터가 지정되었으며,
교육·디지털 전승·국제공연을 통해 지속가능한 문화 네트워크를 구축하고 있다.
발라 교수의 지정은 인도의 공연예술이 지닌 세계적 가치와 문화 간 대화의 의미를 새롭게 보여준다.
학문과 예술을 잇는 전승자
발라 교수는 델리대학교 예술대학 학장을 역임하고,
인도 국영방송(AIR, Doordarshan)의 최고 등급 예술가로 활동하며
모히니야탐의 우아함(lasya)과 까르나틱 음악의 깊이를 무대 위에서 완벽히 조화시켰다.
그녀의 대표작 〈AMSHI – 인도의 잊힌 영웅〉, 〈모히니야탐–카탁 주갈반디〉 등은
인도 고전무용의 표현 영역을 확장하며 예술적 혁신의 상징으로 평가받고 있다.
또한 UCLA, 소카대학교(일본), 호프대학교(영국) 등 세계 유수 대학에서
강연과 시연회를 열어 인도의 문화유산을 널리 전파했다.

국내외 30여 개의 주요 상을 수상했으며,
