Ochang Lineage Honors Ancestral Rite, Upholding a Legacy of Loyalty

The Ochang lineage of the Bannam Park Clan solemnly held its annual ancestral rite on December 4 at Chungikjae Shrine and the ancestral gravesite in Siheung.
This year’s ceremony gathered more than 150 clan members, including Do-yusa Park Seung-won, Deputy Do-yusa Park Man-chun, Former Deputy Do-yusa and Yacheon Lineage Head Park Yang-woo, Seyang Lineage Head Park Seung-jang, Legal Affairs Advisor and Busolgong Lineage Head Park Seung-su, Heritage Advisory Chair and Jibwigong Lineage Head Park Seung-in, and Ritual Committee Chair Park Chan-hyeok.

The Ritual Ceremony

The rite was conducted with utmost solemnity according to traditional Confucian protocols.
The proceedings began with the placement of the ritual tablet, followed by incense offering and the sequence of the First, Second, and Final Libations. Under the guidance of the presiding officiant and ritual assistants, every step was performed with precision and reverence. Participants bowed deeply and listened to the invocation, reflecting on the spirit and virtue of their ancestors.

Remembering the Legacy of Loyalty: Park Dong-ryang

The rite commemorated Ochang-gong Park Dong-ryang, a figure revered for his steadfast loyalty during one of the most tumultuous periods in Joseon history.

As a Ministry of War official, he escorted King Seonjo to the royal refuge in Uiju during the Imjin War, safeguarding the monarchy.

Fluent in Chinese, he served on the diplomatic front, conducting critical negotiations with Ming envoys, playing a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s fate.

Entrusted with the confidential command to protect Prince Yeongchang, he was recognized as one of the Yugyo Chilshin, seven Confucian loyalists who never wavered in their fidelity.

For his unblemished integrity and service, he was posthumously honored with the title Chungik (Loyal Wing).

Remarks by Do-yusa Park Seung-won and lineage head Park Seung-jin

Do-yusa Park Seung-won expressed gratitude to the attending clan members, stating that
“the unwavering loyalty and integrity shown by our ancestor, Ochang-gong Park Dong-ryang, remain a guiding light for us today. Let us carry forward this noble legacy with unity and purpose.”

Ochang lineage head Park Seung-jin added that
“the clan has continued to grow through the collective efforts of its members, and we will remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold the spirit and teachings of our forebears.”

The Bannam Park Clan has long been distinguished by the accomplishments of its members, who shaped Korean history across political, scholarly, and cultural spheres.

Figures such as Park Eung-sun, father of Queen Uiin, and several descendants who received titles such as Princess Jeongan and Noble Consort, illustrate the family’s prominence within the cultural and political heart of Joseon.

In the modern era, the clan continued to influence Korea’s intellectual landscape.
The great scholar and writer Park Ji-won, author of The Jehol Diary, revolutionized late Joseon literature and practical thought.
Park Gyu-su, a royal tutor and Chief State Councillor, became a pioneering advocate of Korea’s modernization.

반남박씨 오창공파는 12월 4일 시흥에 위치한 종중 재실 충익재와 박동량 선조 묘역에서 시제를 엄숙히 봉행하였다.
올해 시제에는 박승원 대종중 도유사, 박승진 오창공파 회장, 박만춘 부도유사, 박화춘 부도유사, 박양우 전 부도유사 겸 야천공파 회장, 박승장 세양공파 회장, 박승수 종규법무자문위원장 겸 부솔공파 회장, 박승인 대종중 종재자문위원장 겸 집위공파 회장, 박찬혁 종사전례위원장을 비롯해 총 140여 명의 종원이 참석해 선조의 덕업을 기리고 가문 전통을 되새겼다.

시향 의례

제향은 전통 유교의 예법에 따라 정갈하고 엄연하게 거행되었다. 지방을 모시고 신위를 청하는 절차를 시작으로, 초헌·아헌·종헌의 헌작이 차례로 이어졌으며, 집례와 집사의 인도 아래 모든 과정이 흐트러짐 없이 진행되었다. 종원들은 삼가 절을 올리고 고천문을 듣는 동안, 조상들이 보여 준 충절과 기개를 마음 깊이 기렸다.

선조의 생애를 기리며: 충익공 박동량의 기개

이번 시제로 기린 오창공 박동량(朴東亮) 선조는 조선 중기 충신의 상징으로 평가되는 인물이다.

임진왜란 발발 직후 병조좌랑으로서 선조 임금을 의주행재소까지 호종하여 왕실의 안전을 확보했고,

뛰어난 중국어 실력으로 명나라 사신과의 외교 교섭을 직접 담당하며 전란 속 조선의 국운을 지키는 최전선에 섰으며,

세자 영창대군을 보호하라는 임금의 밀지를 받은 유교칠신 중 한 사람으로, 어떠한 변고 속에서도 충절을 굽히지 않았다.

이러한 기개와 공덕을 기려 ‘충익(忠翼)’이라는 시호가 내려졌으며, 이는 오늘 후손들에게도 깊은 울림을 준다.
